Bill Cunningham New York - Fashion Flashback Poll

Did you also enjoy the part of the documentary that showed some of Bill's articles focussing on street style trends of the past? Long shirttails, low-riding jeans, pocket chains, stonewashed denim dresses, fanny packs, off the shoulder tops, "Ralph Lauren preppy"... Such a fun flashback!

Many fashion trends are cyclical, of course. After there first moment in the spotlight, they often appear again years later, in an updated and refreshed form. And sometimes we fall in love with them all over again.

My two personal favourites were:
- The stonewashed denim dresses, because they reminded me of a short stonewashed denim skirt with brown pleather pocket detailing I bought as a young teen. Never quite managed to pull that one off:-)
- The shirts with long hems, because to this day I still love the polished and playful look of a longer button-down shirt (tunic-length even). I think the newer versions can look very modern, crisp and sophisticated, tomboy-esque,... lots of possibilities in fact.
E.g. I would wear the look in Angie's post here in a heartbeat!!

Over to you now: What was your favourite fashion flashback in the movie?

I loved the tunic length shirts. I'm so glad they are back in and everywhere.

Men in low riding pants.....not that I like the look, but I loved the idea of this fashion being born on the street and Bill there to document it. I wondered what other fashions have sprung from the street and how do they spread?

Oh yes! That part was fun, Inge!

High five on the shirts with the long tails - they were my best too.

Isis, ALL designers are inspired by streetwear. You could be a trendsetter and you never knew it :)

    Good point, Angie.
Isis: Imagine all the trends we inadvertently may have started:-)

Curious to hear about more fashion flashback favourites;-)

I liked the guys ( from the late 70's I think ) that looked like the precursors to the Village People. It just reminded me of some happy times and people singing "YMCA" ....and how hot everyone thought they were, and now we just laugh and shake our heads.

Oh yes, I remember them too, Isabel.

I already look back at some of my older pictures and shake my head at what I was wearing. With a big smile, and lots of fondness though. Trends can change so quickly, but I still remember feeling fantastic and very fab in many of the outfits. Lots of beautiful memories mixed in there too.

I suddenly picture myself at age 11 in a dressy lilac-y pink jumpsuit. I was a little envious of my younger sister, because she got a sportier looking light blue jumpsuit, which I thought looked way cooler. Then a new friend we met during our holiday at the seaside remarked I looked so "chich and French" in my outfit. After that day I wore my own outfit with lots of pride:-)

I just got to watch it last night :-) Where was I during the 'men in skirts' fad? or did mention of it not even make it to the midwest?

Inge, I know what you mean about older pictures of yourself making you shake your head! But you are kinder about your memories than me. The more stylish I thought I was, the more I shake my head at my old pics ;-)

Oh, I promise you, Sara, mistakes were made here after age 11, and there's plenty of photo evidence:-)
